Tardive dyskinesia is the common extrapyramidal side effect that occurs with the chronic use of antipsychotics. In this study we used an animal model of vacuous chewing movements induced by chronic treatment with haloperidol for the assessment of protective benefit of Ganoderma lucidum, a polyphenolic richmushroom species. Ganoderma lucidum has shown various pharmacological activities that include anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antiallergic and antioxidant activities. There are several species of Ganoderma that are known for their medicinal use but Ganoderma lucidum (red Reishi) and Ganoderma sinensis (black Reishi) exhibit most beneficial health promoting properties. Here we used male albino mice that were treated with two different doses (150 and 300 mg/kg p.o.) of Ganoderma lucidum. The results of our study showed the protective benefit of Ganoderma lucidum against tardive dyskinesia by significant reduction in vacuous chewing movements (VCM’s) in both groups treated with Ganoderma lucidum extract.
